In Ethiopia, in the dioceses of Embeder, Harar and Mek, the Holy See financed a project of aid for the humanitarian emergency that hit a large area of the Cape of Africa following the drought. In particular, it involves in sending and distributing foodstuffs and medicines to the villages.

Global climate changes, mainly produced by the meteorological phenomenon called El Niño, have further dried up the northeastern regions of Ethiopia, where the populations live exclusively on subsistence and itinerant farming.

In December 2015 the UN declared that due to the collapse of the agro-pastoral economy, 10.2 million people now urgently need humanitarian assistance and there is fear of a famine far worse than the one that hit the country in 1984, causing over a million dead.
