Peter’s Pence donated 50 thousand euro to the victims of the earthquake that devastated the south of the island of Lesbos in Greece on 12 June 2017.

The funds will be donated to the Orthodox village of Vrisa, razed to the ground after the first quake.

The strong quake, equal to 6.3 on the Richter scale, damaged buildings and houses, causing the death of a woman and dozens of injured. About 600 people live in villages, many of whom have been forced to leave their homes.

The help destined by the Holy See is a sign of hope and charity and also has "great value from an ecumenical point of view", as explained by the Nunciature's incharge d'affaires, Mons. Massimo Catterin. "A majority Orthodox population will benefit from it. In fact, in Lesbos the Catholics are just about 50".
