Croatia: economic support for the population affected by the earthquake

On 11 January 2021, Pope Francis through the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, donated 100,000 euros through Caritas Croatia to support the inhabitants of the Banovina earthquake area.

As reported by the Croatian Catholic agency IKA, this donation was realized through the Apostolic Nunciature in the Republic of Croatia. The Nuncio, Mons. Giorgio Lingua, informed in writing to the president of the Croatian Caritas, Mons. Boe Rado: “Caritas Croatia - said Mons. Rado – thanks the Holy Father Francis for his closeness in prayer and material help, so that those residents left homeless are temporarily assured a safe and warm space”.

This and other donations from benefactors, Croatian Catholic missions and the simple citizens will be directed towards the purchase of housing modules and for the urgent and appropriate support of the population affected by the earthquake.

“Every day we witness the generosity of many volunteers, citizens and companies, and we were particularly pleased by the gesture of Pope Francis, who decided to act in a quick and concrete manner through Caritas Croatia”, said the director of Caritas Croatia, Mons. Fabijan Svalina.

As reported on the website of the Croatian Bishops’ Conference, so far Caritas Croatia has signed a contract with the company Tehnix Đuro Horvat for the purchase of 100 housing modules, and the delivery of the first ones began on January 16. The housing needs are still great and Caritas Croatia is buying another 100 modules.
