Between September and October 2018 violent earthquakes and a strong tsunami devastated several areas of Indonesia causing over 1,500 dead and thousands injured. The area most affected was the island of Sulawesi where during the hours that followed the earthquake Mount Soputan volcano began to erupt threatening the already exhausted and worn out population.

In the first phase of emergency, Pope Francis, through the Department for the Integral Human Development Service, has sent as a contribution of $ 100,000 that will be distributed, in collaboration with the Apostolic Nunciature, among the areas most affected by the catastrophe.

During the Angelus of Sunday, September 30, 2018 the Holy Father prayed for those affected, "for the deceased, unfortunately many, for the injured and for those who have lost their homes and their jobs. May the Lord console them and support the efforts of those who are trying to bring help".
